From Germany to Sango: My Life-Changing Volunteer Experience
Volunteering with Nyarsango Schulprojekt in the heart of Kenya’s Sango Community was more than a service—it was a profound journey of connection and impact. I arrived from Germany with the goal of helping distribute sanitary towels and assisting in mentorship sessions, but I left with a deeper understanding of resilience, community, and hope.
Each morning began with warm smiles from children eager to learn and grow. I spent time mentoring teenage girls, answering their questions about careers, health, and self-confidence. The highlight was joining the distribution of sanitary products—a moment that went beyond physical needs. One young girl, Mary, shared that she used to miss five school days a month before our program. Now, she’s not only attending class regularly but also leading her class academically.
What surprised me most was the strong community spirit. The people of Sango welcomed me like family, eager to collaborate and make the most of every opportunity. The impact of just being present—listening, guiding, and laughing—was immeasurable.
“I encourage anyone looking for a purposeful experience to consider volunteering with Nyarsango. It’s not about fixing problems—it’s about walking alongside a community and growing together. ”
But but the price of laughter is worth more than the value of a vulputate – Susan Alvaro
